We are a charitable island – with plenty of charities and charitable organisations. If you’re thinking about volunteering it can be difficult to know where to start – so we’ve put together some suggestions here to help you;
I’M INTERESTED IN ANIMALS
If you love animals and wildlife there are plenty of things you do to volunteer – collecting injured wildlife, cleaning enclosures, crafting beds and blankets, walking or exercising animals. Or you could donate bedding, equipment, or food. Get in touch with your wildlife charity of choice directly to see how you can help.
I’M INTERESTED IN PEOPLE
You’ve got great people skills – We have a wide range of organisations here that support a wide range of people. There are opportunities to volunteer your time just listening, manning a phone line, making cups of tea, supporting social interaction groups – singing, card playing, bingo, assisting with reception desks, events, staffing the retail outlet, trips out and much more. You may require a police check to volunteer with some groups, please contact your chosen charity directly to see how you can help.
I’M INTERESTED IN DIGITAL
Are you a bit of a computer whizz, a social media master? Why not offer your time and skill to local charities through maintaining or updating their websites, providing classes or workshops on using technologies or digital topics, or staffing their social media? Speak to your chosen charity directly to see what assistance they might want.
I’M INTERESTED IN OUR ENVIRONMENT
Our environment is a special place – with marine nature reserves, Areas of Scientific Interest (ASSI) and being a UNESCO biosphere site. There are plenty of options for volunteering to improve and help our environment – litter picking, land and equipment maintenance, replacement of facilities, painting and washing of amenities, planting and weeding. Most of these do require the correct permissions, so please make sure to approach your chosen charity or local authority before starting.
I’M INTERESTED IN FUNDRAISING
We don’t always have time to volunteer – but that doesn’t mean you can’t help your chosen charity. Why not do some fundraising? Bake sales, coffee mornings, haircuts, sponsored runs, car washes, abseiling, swimming, silences. The possibilities are endless, and the events don’t have to be huge – every little helps.
