As part of the 2018 Year of Our Island initiative we transformed an old brownfield site into a temporary, education and community based garden – designed to celebrate Our Island as a special place to live and work and our status as a UNESCO world biosphere region.
You can visit our garden daily from March to September, 8am – 8pm.
It is situated on Station Road, St Johns. Directly across from St Johns School, it has ample parking nearby and is on a bus route. You’ll find picnic tables (wheelchair friendly) and a small lawn area as well as the garden itself.
The garden features a centrepiece taking its inspiration from the concentric circles of Tynwald hill, with each circle representing a part of our Island – the sea, the land and the people of Mann. There are also 18 raised beds designed and filled by children from Manx primary schools – featuring flowers and plants, sculptures, stones and other wonderful interpretative art. The schools were asked to design their raised beds were to celebrate our biosphere status and portray what makes the Isle of Man a special place for them to live.
In creating this garden, we managed to truly capture the essence of the Our Island messaging - explore more, do more, share more. Young people were given the opportunity to create and try something new, we’ve built an accessible community space and we hope it will continued to be enjoyed – as a picnic spot, a wildlife retreat, an educational plot and as a creative collaboration. We hope you’ll enjoy visiting the garden as much as we enjoyed creating it!
